Supporting Flood-Affected Farmers in Kalaw
Supporting Flood-Affected Farmers in Kalaw
From 10–12 September 2024, severe flooding impacted Aung Pan, Kalaw, Nyaung Shwe, and Inle, causing soil erosion, plantation loss, and major market disruptions. In Aung Pan and Kalaw, many farmers could not replant due to landslide risks, debris, soil degradation, crop diseases, and blocked roads.
To help farmers recover and rebuild sustainably, the Learning & Growing Together (LGT) Program, with support from SA4D and in collaboration with Taung Thu Tadar, introduced targeted rehabilitation activities.
Planned Activities
- Land Treatment & Soil Testing: Assessing soil health and providing necessary inputs.
- Seed Distribution: Supplying seeds for replanting.
- Pest Awareness: Training on managing rodents, snakes, and post-flood pests.
- Value-Addition Training: Introducing skills for tomato and chili processing.
Kalaw Activities (November 2024)
Sao Bwe Village
Seventeen farmers received training on post-flood rehabilitation, rodent control, and using bokashi organic fertilizer. They also joined hands-on sessions on tomato processing and received ten bags of bokashi each.
Kyee Village
Fifteen farmers participated in similar training. An additional session on golden snail control was provided in response to community requests.
Soil tests showed that bokashi fertilizer was sufficient to restore soil health, and farmers have now resumed cultivation—an encouraging step toward recovery and long-term resilience.
