Post-Earthquake Response

On 28 March 2025, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar. According to UN reports, the earthquake caused more than 3,600 deaths and affected over five million people. Sagaing and Mandalay were among the hardest-hit regions. The disaster further intensified existing political, economic, and humanitarian vulnerabilities.

Emergency Assistance by MFT-SE

Tents and Emergency Shelter

MFT-SE provided emergency tents and tarpaulin sheets to several monastic schools and community institutions across Sagaing, with coordination support from Daw Wint Wint Lin (J-Icon).

Solar Power Support

At the time of donation, government electricity had not yet been restored in many affected areas. MFT-SE installed solar systems to ensure immediate access to lighting, safety, and continuity of learning. (Additional donors have since provided further support.)

Supported Institutions:

  • Yadanar Theingi Nunnery
Home to more than 700 students. Solar panels and batteries donated in April served as the institution’s only electricity source at that time.
  • Aung Myay Oo Monastic School
Serving over 1,000 students. Received solar panels and inverters to maintain essential lighting during the power outage.
  • Lay Kyun Myay Oak Kyune Monastic School
Previously accommodating around 1,400 students. Two solar-panel systems and inverters were provided for the dormitories, along with tents and tarpaulins, functioning as the primary electricity source during early recovery.
  • J-Icon Relief Site
MFT-SE’s lighting support enabled charging stations for relief workers. J-Icon has since become a coordination partner working on earthquake relief with various organizations on ground.

Medical & Humanitarian Support

MFT-SE funded medical supplies for camps on the outskirts of Sagaing and supported funeral rites to ensure dignity for affected families. Additionally, financial assistance was provided to 36 families and institutions to cover funeral expenses, ongoing medical treatment, and essential spiritual support.

Education & Youth Empowerment

To support young people affected by the earthquake, MFT-SE and the LGT program initiated the following:

  • Grade 12 English (Written) Course
Delivered in October 2025 and January 2026 to help students prepare for their national examinations.
  • Summer Programs under LGT – March 2026
    • Basic Business Knowledge (BBK) Course
    • Job Readiness Skills Development Training

These programs aim to expand wage-employment and self-employment opportunities for youth in Sagaing.
